The
background of the Viking Ship stamps was printed first and the inscription
and frame were applied in a second printing operation. The famous
variety of the 5 Mk. stamp with the inverted background was probably
printed by feeding a sheet provided with a background impression into
the press with an inverted inscription plate already in position.
Some of these stamps have gum and some have not. As far as it is known,
this variety was never sold over the counter. The above block of four was donated by EFÜR in October 2002 to the Estonia Post Museum in Tartu. |
