AIR
MAILS, FINAL ISSUE
Definitive Air Mail Stamps were issued for the re-opening of the Tallinn-Helsinki
line on February 12, 1924, to cover the necessary supplementary air
mail fee.
Design by Karl Triumph. The 5 and 10 Mk. values show
the Sablatnig P III machine (with landing wheels and snow runners),
the 15 - 45 Mk. show various Junkers F.13 machines (with floats, landing
wheels and snow runners).
Paper: The imperforate stamps and the first printing
of the perforated stamps were printed on ligat (first) paper. The
late printings were made on wove (last) paper with an easily visible
horizontal mesh.
Gum: On the ligat paper the gum is white and shiny.
It is liable to be rough with small air-bubbles. The late printings
have a pure white, smooth, shiny gum that is completely free from
air bubbles.
Print: Typographed by the GPW. Printing sheets (=
counter sheets) of 50 stamps each.
The sheets have a faint underprint in the color of the stamp. Above
and below the blocks there are marginal lines in the two colors. Only
a few sheets of the first perforated stamps have the marginal lines,
they are completely absent on the wove paper.
There are two printings of the 45 Mk. value of the imperforate stamp
(the second one in a duller and more reddish shade) and of the perforated
stamps on the last paper.
Color shades do exist but are unimportant.
