NATIONAL
THEATRES
The issue consists of three values and was mainly to be used for International
Mail. Actually a lot of these stamps were used on Postal Money Orders
and Parcel Post Cards.
Design by Karl Triumph (modified by I. Breiberg and
Georg Westenberg) shows the theatres Estonia in Tallinn (30 and 70
Mk.) and Vanemuine in Tartu (40 Mk.).
Paper: The Ligat paper was used for the 30 and 70
Mk. values and wove paper for the 40 Mk.
Gum: The Ligat paper has a yellowish and streaky
gum whereas the gum of the 40 Mk. is white, smooth and shiny.
Print: Two-color typography. Printers's sheet of
the 30 and 70 Mk. consists of 200 stamps, arranged in panes of 50
each, separared by gutters. The 40 Mk. value was printed in sheets
of 50. Counter pane was 50 stamps. Gutter pairs are not known. The
sheets have an underprinted protective network. Only the 40 Mk. value
har marginal figures on the left and top side.
Perforation: 14 x 13 1/2, comb perforation.
Proofs and color trials are known.
Forgeries are not known.
Valid: The sale of the stamps was continued even
after the senti-currency had been introduced (1 Mk. = 1 Sent). Valid
until December 31, 1940.
