VIEWS
OF CITIES ISSUE
A surcharged issue for the benefit of a fund for the Independence
Memorial in Tallinn.
Design by Johann Naha, showing the Castle of Kuressaare,
the Ruins of the Cathedral in Tartu, the Parliament House, the Fortress
of Narva and a View of Tallinn.
Paper: Thick, white paper, produced in Finland and
cut into the size of printing sheets before delivery. The paper is
horizontally or vertically laid with sheet watermark (Coat of Arms
of Finland) in size of 14 1/2 x 19 cm. The watermark does not appear
on each printing sheet. The horizontally and vertically laid sheets
can be found in about the same proportion. A few sheets are known
on unlaid paper.
Print: Printing plates of 100 or 50 (20 and 40 Mk)
stamps each. All stamps are consecutively numbered at mid-stamp level
and have a protective network in different color for each stamp. Marginal
figures can be found in top and in left of the sheet. Two register
crosses have been placed on top of the sheet.
Gum: Yellowish and even.
Perforation: 5, 10, 12 Mk. 141/2 x 14 20 and 40 Mk.
14 x 13 1/2. Comb perforation.
Proofs: Various types of proofs exist. Essays also
are known, probably by Johann Naha.
Forgeries are not known.
Valid: Sold over the counter from November 19 - December
18,1927. Valid until January 18, 1928. The unsold remainders were
presented to the Independence Memorial Fund and found their way to
stamp dealers.
