NEW
CURRENCY OVERPRINTS IN 1928

An overprinted issue commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Independence.
5 values of the Weaver/Smith issue were overprinted in two lines with
the letters "s" (senti) and the date. OPT in black (5 and
15 senti) or in red (2, 10 and 20 senti).
Paper: For this issue a reprint of all denominations
was made on the "last" paper (wove pattern). A few sheets
of the 15 senti value were printed both on the horizontally ribbed
and on the thin paper. These paper varieties are rare.
Print: The overprint was stereotyped to a plate for
400 stamps. As the plate did not fit properly to the printing sheet
of stamps, it was cut into several pieces and reassembled. The result
was that in all panes the OPT in the first six vertical rows is approx.
1 mm. lower in relation to the last four rows. Numerous OPT errors
have occurred due to wear and tear. The most famous variety is the
serious shifting of the OPT on the 2 and 5 senti values, resulting
in the two letters "s" being at the top of the stamp. Consequently
these values also appear with the letters "s" missing.
The same plate was used for all values. The OPT is shiny and often
penetrates the paper.
Gum: white and even.
Perforation: Comb perforation 14 1/2 x 14. One pane
of the 10 s. value is known to exist imperforate. It has been reported
that the three remaining panes were noticed and destroyed. The imperforate
stamps are rare.
Proofs are known including proof of OPT on yellowish
paper. Price: 30 USD (please note that all prices
are estimates in USD, based on the average retail market of
1985, when the original catalogue/handbook was
written. The prices are considerably higher today).
Forgeries are known of the imperforate 10 senti (on
ligat paper) and of the 15 senti value. Further forgeries are known
of the displaced varieties. The 10 senti value also has been reported
with a black OPT.
Valid until December 31, 1940.
