NUMERAL
DESIGN
A regular issue of 5 and 10 penni stamps. A 20 penni stamp was prepared
but not issued. Design by Peet Aren.
Originally the issue was supposed to be with a smaller oval frame
and with smaller numbers. After some proofs of two different sizes
of ovals, it was decided to abandon the original design and the final
one was used.
Paper: A white smooth paper was used. The thickness
forthefirst and second printing of the 5 p. being 0.06-0.065 mm. The
third printing had a thicker paper - 0.07-0.085 mm. Less frequently
a thinner paper appears (0.055 mm). The 10 p. stamps usually shows
little variation in paper thickness. The perforated stamp is mostly
0.05-0.055 and the imperforate one 0.06-0.065 mm. However, a thicker
(0.07-0.08 mm) paper also exists. A horizontal watermark-line can
be found.
Gum: The perforated 10 p. has a white, smooth and
shiny gum. Only very seldom an uneven gum can be found. For the imperforate
stamps the gum is more irregular, mostly streaky, showing various
shades from white to dirty brown.
Print: Lithographed by Eduard Bergmann in Tartu.
The perforated issue of the 10 p. was printed in sheets of 200, arranged
in two panes of 100 each, separated by a vertical gutter. No gutter
pairs are known. The 5 p. and the imperforate 10 p. were printed in
sheets of 400, arranged in four panes of 100 each, separated by gutters.
The printer's sheets were cut into four counter panes at the printers.
Full printing sheets were distributed only during the early printing
of the 5 p. For all three printings of the 5 p. the same litho stone
was used. The print is imperfect and often unclear, especially for
the third printing.

Perforation: Only the first printing of the 10 p.
was officially perforated using a comb-perforating machine, unsuitable
for stamps. The perforation was not successful. Often one or two holes
are missing or unnecessary holes are present. Wide and narrow stamps
are usual. Pairs with horizontal or vertical double perforation are
known. Two partly imperforate sheets reached the sales counter. It
was decided that the perforation was not to be continued and the 5
p. and the following printings of the 10 p. are imperforate. A few
sheets of the 5 p. have been perforated in the printing shop with
the same machine, but owe their existence to private initiative. Postmaster
perforations are known.
Proofs: A considerable number of essays in various
shades or in completely new colors were printed. Quite a few of these
are private production with the original plates. However, also genuine
proofs were made and today we are not able to tell the difference.
Essays of the stamps
in different sizes (as above) are known. Proofs are also known of
the unissued 20 p. values in following colors: red, dark yellow.
green (offset), dull blueish green, olive green, blue, greyish black
on grey paper and black. Price: 40 USD each. Please
note that all prices are estimates in USD, based on the average retail
market of 1985, when the original catalogue/handbook
was written. The prices are considerably higher today.
Forgeries are known.
